The September checklist

The September checklist

Yesterday we made the argument: Q4 pipeline gets built in September, and the lead times push the real start into August. Arguments do not dial phones. This is the companion piece, the checklist, in the order the items are due. Today is August 18. Counting the two weeks left in August and the four weeks of September, there are six working weeks between now and October. Here is what each one owes you.

The two August weeks

  • Decide the model this week. In-house, provider, or a founder doing it nights and weekends. Every downstream date depends on this one, because a program that is not staffed cannot start. A signed engagement takes about ten business days to first dial, which means a decision made this week is dialing in early September and a decision made in mid-September is dialing in October.
  • Finish the list. The September target list should already be under construction, verified, tiered, and scored. If it is not, this is the last week that work can happen without stealing calling days from September itself.
  • Confirm the budget. If the Q4 program needs money that is not yet approved, the ask happens now, while approvers are still reachable and the spend can still start on time.

The four September weeks

  • Week one, September 1 to 4: first dials. A short week, and that is fine. The job is contact, not conversion: opener live, tier-one accounts getting their first touches, the message meeting real objections for the first time.
  • Week two, from the 8th: full volume. Labor Day lands on September 7 this year, and the day after it is when the fall truly opens. Buyers are back, calendars are real. This is the first week that should look like the program at full speed.
  • Week three: revise the message. Two weeks of live conversations is enough to hear what survives contact. Tighten the opener, reorder the questions, retire the line nobody responds to. The teams that skip this revision run October on a September first draft.
  • Week four: read the funnel and steer. Dials, connects, conversations, set versus held. The month's numbers say which segments answer and which tier was mislabeled, and they set October's list. This is also the week to book October meetings while September attention is still warm.

The one thing not on the list

There is no week reserved for getting started. Starting is what August is for, and both August items compress badly. A list built in a hurry calls the wrong accounts, and a program stood up in October pays full price to ramp through the weeks it was supposed to harvest.

If the checklist reads as reasonable but unstaffed, that is the honest signal to get help now rather than in October. A CommandVA rep signed this week is dialing a scored list inside about two weeks, with the build happening on our side while your team keeps closing.
