Build September's list in August

Build September's list in August

September is the best calling month on the fall calendar, and most teams spend its first week building the list they should have finished in August. The market does not wait for them. Buyers come back from summer with full attention and finite patience, and the team whose rep dials a scored, verified account on the first Tuesday is working a different quarter than the team still exporting spreadsheets. The fall list is an August project. Here is the shape of it.

Score signals while the market is quiet

August is thin on conversations but it is not thin on information. Funding announcements, leadership hires, job postings, expansions: the signals keep firing all month, and nobody is calling against them. That is the opportunity. Run the scoring pass weekly through August and let the evidence accumulate, because accounts where several signals land together outrank any single trigger, the compounding we described in when signals stack. By the last week of the month you are not guessing which accounts matter. You have four weeks of scored evidence saying so, and the September opener writes itself from the signal: a specific reason to call, dated within the quarter.

Pick tier one on evidence, not affection

The August list-build is also the honest moment to re-rank. The tier-one method concentrates real effort on a small set of accounts and rotates the rest, and tier one is only as good as its last review. Accounts that spent the spring not answering, not engaging, and firing no signals do not keep their seats because someone likes the logo. Demote them to the rotation. Promote the accounts the summer's signals actually pointed at. A tier one refreshed on evidence every quarter stays a weapon. One frozen since January is a comfort blanket with fifty names on it.

Then verify what survives. Titles moved over the summer, and the job-change wave means a meaningful slice of any spring list now points at the wrong person or a dead number. We walked the verification pass itself in the August re-verify, so the short version here: every tier-one record gets checked by a person before September, because a wrong-number morning is how calling momentum dies on day one.

What done looks like by Labor Day

  • A tier one of about fifty accounts, each with a current signal, a verified contact, and a one-line reason to call that a rep can say aloud.
  • A rotation list behind it, deduplicated, sorted by score, deep enough to feed a full month of dialing without a mid-month scramble.
  • A first-week calling plan, tier one first, best signals first, so the strongest accounts hear from you before your competitors finish their exports.

None of this is glamorous work, which is exactly why the quiet weeks are the right time to do it. It is also the work that decides whether September's energy lands on the right doors or leaks into administration.

Our clients enter September with this already done: signal scoring runs weekly all year in our system, and the fall tier one comes out of an August review, not a holiday-weekend panic. If your September list is currently a spring export and a good intention, book a strategy call this month. Building the list right takes weeks. August still has them.
