You just raised a Series A. Pipeline before headcount.

You just raised a Series A. Pipeline before headcount.

You closed the round. The board deck now has a pipeline slide with a number on it, and the instinct is to hire your way there: two SDRs, an AE, maybe a sales leader to run them. That is the standard playbook, and for most post-A companies it is premature.

Headcount scales a motion. It does not create one.

Hiring SDRs before you have a proven outbound motion means paying salaries while you discover, slowly and expensively, that your ICP is fuzzy and your message does not convert. The failure mode is well documented. SDR tenure averages under two years industry-wide, and a mis-hire made during the post-raise scramble costs you both the fully loaded salary and the two quarters of pipeline you did not build. We broke that math down in the real cost of an in-house SDR.

The sequence that works runs the other way. Prove the motion first, then scale it with headcount. Establish which segments answer, which message converts, and what a qualified meeting costs. Then hand your first in-house hires a playbook instead of a blank page.

What "proving the motion" looks like

  • A written ICP tested against actual conversations, not conference-room theory
  • A call track and objection map with 90 days of iteration behind it
  • A known cost per AE-accepted meeting, which is the number your next board deck actually needs

A dedicated rep inside a managed system gets you those three things in a quarter, month-to-month, without adding permanent burn before the model is proven. Several of our clients came to us in exactly this post-raise window. Enough of them that it is one of the standing solutions on our site.
