August is prep month

August is prep month

Tomorrow the quietest month of the sales year begins, and there are two ways to spend it. Most teams coast through it and file the slow numbers under seasonality. The better teams treat August as the build month, because the September they want gets assembled now, piece by piece, and the pieces have an order.

The prep list, in order

First, finish the audit. We laid out the four checks earlier this week in the August audit: data, message, calendar, capacity. Everything else on this list depends on knowing which of the four came back broken, so the audit goes first. It is half a day. Spend it in week one.

Second, build the September list. Tier one gets named account by account, signals get rescored against what actually happened over the summer, and the accounts that went quiet or changed shape get replaced rather than carried out of habit. A list finalized in August means September dials start against targets, not against a to-do item.

Third, refresh the message. The fall version of the call track answers a different moment than the spring version did: budgets being defended, plans being written, the year suddenly finite. Draft it now, while there is time to say it out loud and fix what sounds wrong, instead of editing live against September prospects.

Fourth, book September in August. This is the item teams skip because it feels early, and it is the highest-yield item on the list. Decision-makers are more reachable in August than their out-of-office replies suggest; we made that case in the decision-maker did not go to the beach. Gatekeeping thins out, calendars have room, and a September slot requested now is simply granted, where the same slot requested in September competes with everyone who waited. August conversations that end with "let's talk the week after Labor Day, here is an invite" are the cheapest September meetings you will ever set.

Fifth, settle staffing. Whoever is dialing in September needs to be hired, ramped, or contracted by the end of August, and the timeline math from yesterday's post does not soften with delay. Decide the seat question this month or accept that October decides it for you.

Quiet is the asset

The instinct to ease off in August comes from reading low activity around you as a signal to match it. The opposite read is correct. Fewer competing calls, fewer competing emails, and buyers with actual thinking time make August the cheapest attention of the second half, an argument we first made about early summer in the summer slowdown is a choice. A team that builds through it starts September already moving. A team that coasts spends September building, which is to say spends September behind.

Our reps run this list for every client without being asked, because the contract does not take August off. If your own September currently depends on work that has not started, book a strategy call this week. Thirty minutes now is worth more than any meeting we could have with you in October.
