The fall SDR hiring rush starts now

The fall SDR hiring rush starts now

A rep who starts in September was an offer in August, which was an interview loop in early August, which was a role posted in late July. That arithmetic is why the fall SDR hiring rush is not a September event. It is happening now, this week, while half the people it depends on are out of office.

The collision

Hiring season and vacation season overlap almost perfectly, and the overlap punishes every step. Candidates take longer to respond in August. Interview panels cannot find a common hour because someone is always away. The hiring manager's own calendar is the worst of the lot. Then the offer, once accepted, sits behind a two-week notice period that may itself straddle someone's planned week off. Each delay is small. Stacked, they turn a posting that slips to mid-August into an October start, and the market makes it worse: everyone else who wants a September seat is fishing the same candidate pool on the same compressed clock. We watched the mirror image of this in January, when the Q1 window closed on teams that started in February.

What an October start actually buys

An October start is not October pipeline. Ramp on a new SDR runs four to six months, which puts full productivity somewhere around February. The rep spends the entire fall push learning the product, the list, and the phones, exactly through the weeks the seat was hired to harvest. And the seat charges full price while it learns: roughly $10,000 a month fully loaded, the stack we priced in the three-year cost of the seat, none of it discounted for onboarding. Hiring for fall in October is paying winter prices for spring output.

The honest options in late July

  • Move this week. Post the role now, pre-book the interview loop around known vacations, and target an offer by the end of August. It is tight, and it works only if the process is treated like a deadline rather than a pipeline.
  • Stop pretending, plan for January. If the posting will not go up until mid-August, the realistic outcome is a Q4 start that produces in Q1. Better to admit that now and decide deliberately how the fall gets covered than to discover it in November.
  • Separate the seat from the season. A dedicated outsourced rep goes from signed agreement to live dialing in about ten business days, the sequence we laid out in from signed to first dial, because the hiring, training infrastructure, and management already exist. That covers September on September's schedule, and it does not foreclose an in-house hire later; some of our clients run the seat while they recruit deliberately instead of desperately.

The one option that does not exist is deciding in September and getting September. If the fall number depends on a seat that is not filled today, the choice is which of the three paths above you are on, and it is being made this week whether or not anyone names it. If the third one is worth a look, here is how we run a first SDR function, and a strategy call will give you the honest timeline against your own calendar.
