August meetings hold better than you think

August meetings hold better than you think

Every year, somewhere in the first week of August, a founder tells the team to ease off booking meetings because nobody shows this month. The belief costs four weeks of pipeline, and the calendar math runs the other way. Meetings booked in August hold at rates as good as the rest of the year, and often better, because the single biggest killer of a booked meeting is scarce in August: the competing meeting.

Fewer meetings means fewer conflicts

Most no-shows are not rejections. They are collisions. A board prep lands on the slot, a customer escalation eats the afternoon, a standing review gets moved onto your half hour, and the prospect takes the path of least resistance, which is skipping the call with the vendor they barely know. August thins exactly that layer of the calendar. Fewer internal reviews, fewer offsites, fewer quarterly ceremonies competing for the same thirty minutes. The meeting you book into an August calendar simply has less traffic to survive.

The benchmark does not take the month off either. A healthy program holds 75 to 85 percent of what it books, the standard we laid out in yesterday's post on the set-versus-held gap, and an August program that keeps its confirmation cadence running has no structural reason to fall below that band. The other summer fear, that the decision-maker is gone, mostly fails on inspection too. A vacation is a week or two, not a month, and as we noted in June, the owner of the number tends to guard the office while the team rotates out. The buyer who answers in August is sitting at a desk with unusual amounts of white space on it.

Two adjustments the month does require

Shorten the lead time. Open calendars are an invitation. When the prospect's week is thin, the same-week slot is usually available, and near-term slots hold best in any month because enthusiasm decays faster than calendars fill. Booking Tuesday for Thursday beats booking Tuesday for the week after Labor Day by a wide margin, and the slot selection logic from meeting times that hold applies with more room to work.

Confirm around travel. The one genuinely August-shaped risk is the prospect who books on Tuesday and leaves for the lake on Friday. The counter is unglamorous: ask about the next two weeks while booking, send the recap the same day, and confirm the business day before. That is the ordinary cadence for any month, applied with slightly more attention to the phrase "before you head out."

What an August meeting is worth

A held August meeting does more than one meeting's work. Roughly one in two held meetings advances, and the ones held now advance into September conversations while much of your market is still drafting its back-to-school email. The team that booked straight through August walks into the fall with live threads. The team that eased off walks in with a list and a cold start, and the difference shows up in the funnel for a quarter.

Our reps book client calendars straight through the month, same confirmation cadence, no summer settings. If your own program has quietly gone to half speed on the theory that August cannot hold a meeting, book a strategy call. Bring your set-versus-held numbers for July and we will show you what the month is actually capable of.
