The AI SDR experiment, one year later

By now, most sales leaders we talk to have run the experiment or watched a peer run it: an AI SDR that promised hundreds of personalized touches a day at a fraction of a human's cost. A year of market results is in, and the pattern is consistent enough to write down.
What AI outbound is genuinely good at
Research and volume. AI tools compress hours of account research into seconds, draft passable first-touch emails, and never miss a follow-up. For teams whose motion is high-volume and low-touch, that is real leverage. We use AI-assisted research and signal monitoring in our own system without hesitation.
Where the experiments broke
Deliverability collapse. Volume is a shared resource. When every vendor's AI sends more, everyone's reply rates fall and inbox filtering tightens. The teams that scaled AI email hardest often burned their domains fastest.
The trust ceiling. Buyers got fluent at spotting synthetic personalization. In trust-driven verticals, getting caught automating "personal" outreach costs more than silence. A meeting is a commitment of an executive's time, and people make that commitment to people.
No one to have the conversation. The hardest part of outbound was never sending the message. It is the fifteen live minutes where a skeptical operator asks a hard question and someone has to actually know the answer.
The synthesis
The lesson here is not "AI bad." AI belongs in the parts of the system that reward speed and scale: research, signals, drafting, scheduling. The conversation itself stays human. That is how we build. Signal-based targeting feeds a named, full-time human rep who picks up the phone, with email and LinkedIn in support.
If your AI SDR experiment did not deliver the meetings the demo promised, you are in good company. It has been one of the most common situations on our strategy calls this year. Book one and bring the numbers. We will show you where the human belongs in your motion.
One dedicated, full-time SDR inside a complete outbound system. Written meeting SLA, weekly reporting, month-to-month. A 30-minute call tells you if it fits.
